Ever wondered how films are made? Ever wondered why people blame video games for violence? Ever wanted to create your own DVD? If so, Media Studies is for you!
Throughout the course, you will study a range of media texts: film, TV, newspapers, magazines, the music industry and video games. The course content is focused around set media texts: such as Luther, The Sun newspaper and Fortnite.
Media Studies is a subject that combines practical ad written work. You will develop your analytical writing skills, as well as skills at applying theory and criticism to media products. As well as this, there will be the opportunity to hone your creative skills by creating a marketing campaign for a film.
You will have access to computers during this time, as well as cameras to take original images to support your production
A sound knowledge of ICT and literacy are key skills required to study Media. There will be multiple opportunities for you to develop your ICT skills throughout the course.
Career Opportunities
Media Studies students can access a range of courses and career paths. These include: film directing, creating DVD / CD covers, advertising, radio, computer gaming, public relations, film, journalism, television, theatrical make-up and costume design. Many previous New College Leicester students have gone to university to complete a degree in media studies. One student has signed to a record label and produces his own music videos!
Post-16 opportunities
Media Studies at GCSE enables students to either continue their study of Media Studies at post-16, or hone in on specific topics such as Journalism or Film Studies. The analytical writing skills also support the study of English and their knowledge of marketing and industry also compliments business studies at Post 16.
