The BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Award in Music Practice allows you to learn about the various music products, develop valuable skills and techniques in music creation, performance and production and explore potential careers in the industry.

As the BTEC Tech Award in Music Practice is a practical introduction to life and work in the industry, you will explore how to develop skills, including teamwork, leadership and communication through performance, composition and technical assignments. This is developed throughout the first two internally assessed components. You will then develop and present music to a brief in the third component through performance or using music technology.Career Opportunities

Assessment

The course has two internally assessed components, and one that is externally assessed: these components build on each other to develop musical practice and growth in confidence:

• Component 1: ‘Exploring Music Styles’ You will explore different sytles and genres of music from video to samba, reggae, film and EDM. You will take part in practical workshops to understand the styles before creating your own examples 
• Component 2: ’Music Skills Development’ This component is about developing musical skills and applying them to a project. You can choose to explore two of performance, production and compostion.
• Component 3: ‘Responding to a commercial brief’ As a composer, performer or producer, you will create a piece based on an exisiting song. You will change the style of the song and use your skills to produce a creative piece suited to the music industry.

Requirements

An interest in discovering music through composing, music technology or performing is essential. Prior music experience is not necessary. It is more important that you bring enthusiasm for music and be ready to try out lots of creative ideas. While you are not required to perform a solo as part of this course, you will have the opportunity should you wish and can use your instrument/voice in multiple projects.

Where can it lead?

After completing the course, you can continue further vocational and academic study at level 2 and level 3 within the music, music technology, technical theatre subjects, as well as apprenticeships and traineeships. What’s more, the transferable skills you master during your studies such as self-reflection, communication, teamwork and problem solving will also support your academic progress.

Potential careers include: Artist, session musician, composer, DJ, sound engineer, recording engineer, mixing engineer, teacher, sound designer, music supervisor
