Year 7 Learning

In Year 7 Citizenship is taught through the Personal Development Curriculum. Other departments are also building citizenship knowledge through their curriculums.

Rights and equalities:
The precious liberties enjoyed by the citizens of the United Kingdom
  • The Five British Values
  • What is Citizenship?
  • What are Human Rights?
  • How have human Rights developed?
  • How can we be human rights defenders?

The aim is for students to gain deeper conceptual knowledge of citizenship around:

Democracy and Government

  • To have an in-depth understanding of how democracy has shaped and evolved over time, in. the UK and across the world.

Rights and Responsibilities

  • To have awareness and understanding of rights and the role Citizenship plays in creating responsible citizens.

Fairness and Justice

  • To understand the purpose of the justice system and be able to consider appropriate a range of appropriate punishment whilst understanding how laws are shaped and enforced.

Active Citizenship

  • To provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society whilst equipping pupils with the skills and knowledge to explore political and social issues critically, to weigh evidence, debate and make reasoned arguments.

Year 7 End Points

  • Be able to identify the Five British Values
  • Be able to identify the features of a democracy
  • Explain the purpose of why democracy is useful to society
  • Be able to identify how human rights have developed an who protects them
  • Be able to identify what could be done to change things in communities and plan some action
  • Be able to take part decision-making activities with others on citizenship issues, in contexts that are familiar to them
  • Be able to describe some of the groups and communities they belong to and recognise that people in their communities are different
