Active Together help organisations and individuals support more people to be active and move more.

Summary of Partnership

Active Together work collaboratively with New College Leicester and other local schools and organisations who share the ambition to reduce inequalities in physical activity experienced through access and/or awareness.

Projects

Over the last 18 months, Active Together have worked in partnership with the New Parks Hub and LCFC in the Community, through an Active Together Development Officer and Community Activator. The aim has been to engage with members of the New Parks community and other key local organisations to identify barriers to and provide opportunities for residents to access physical activity and sport locally. The community identified the greatest need around children and young people, both in terms of activity provision and future training and development for volunteer and employment opportunities.

Partnership Comment

Active Together would like to continue working with New College Leicester, to ensure that local children and young people can access a variety of free or low cost sport & physical activity provision.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a life changing experience. It is an opportunity to discover new interests and talents. It is a tool to develop essential skills for like and work. It is an internationally recognised mark of achievement; respected by colleges, sixth forms and employers.

New College Leicester is a fully licensed organisation. We currently offer the DofE programme at Bronze level that pupils can choose to complete in Year 9 and 10. There are four sections to complete at Bronze level. They involve helping the community or environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition. Once you have completed your Bronze Award, you can advance on to completing your Silver or even Gold Award. Pupils often complete these at college, sixth form, university or during their apprenticeship.

Any young person can do their DofE regardless of ability, gender, background or location. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition but rather about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries.

Achieving your Bronze DofE award will give you skills, confidence and an edge over others when you apply for college, university or a job. Beyond your academic achievements, colleges, universities and employers want to see evidence of so called ‘soft skills’ that you have developed through extra-curricular activities such as communication commitment, leadership and teamwork. Your DofE Award is a fantastic way to demonstrate and evidence these skills in practice.

At New College, your DofE Leader and DofE Manager will guide you through your 4 sections. You will need to commit to completing some sort of community work, some physical activity to improve fitness and take on a new skill. All of these you will need to keep evidence of so you can be verified. Once these sections have been completed, it is time to start planning for the expedition – 2 days hiking and 1 night camping!

You will be expected to attend weekly meetings where you will need to update your DofE Leader on the progress you are making towards your award. These sessions will also involve some training for your expedition such as map reading, route planning, navigation skills, first aid and campcraft.

The award can be completed in as little as 6 to 12 months. This image shows how you divide your time between the four sections.

To complete the award, it does require a small fee. The DofE charges £24 to enrol its participants. There is then an additional cost to parents to cover the cost of the expedition. This includes the purchase of walking boots, clothing, camping fees, fuel and transport costs. However, at New College, we have an extensive collection of equipment that we lend to participants (tents, rucksacks, sleeping bags, stoves, roll mats etc.) and this keeps the down to an absolute minimum.

If you think you have the commitment and correct attitude to complete your Bronze DofE Award, then speak to the school’s DofE Manager, Mr Hepworth-Adcock.

You can find more information on the DofE Award via this webpage: https://www.dofe.org/

Enjoyed going to the events, it was fun. Everyone was very supportive of each other and there was good sportsmanship.

Staff Comment

Over the course of the year our students from New College Leicester gets given the opportunity to help lead many primary school events whether that’s hosted here at New College or elsewhere. We have been to places like Aylestone leisure centre, Loughborough University and Kirby Muxloe Golf Course to help lead a range of activities such as Athletics, Boccia, Kurling, Tri-Golf, Cycling, Tennis and Gymnastics.

The Inspire Together events have been a great platform for our New College Leicester students to develop their leadership and management skills. These events give our students the confidence to be young independent individuals and also the courage to step out of their comfort zones. Not only they get to experience leading a variety of sporting activities but also able to be great role models to the younger generation.

What I enjoy about these events is seeing the togetherness and how they make the environment positive for young children to feel safe to take part in a range of activities.

We are proud of our excellent track record of collaborative place based leadership to date and have learnt an enormous amount about how to engage local people and the wider systems with authenticity and purpose. As such, the appetite for learning and building active, healthy communities is now shared by a growing network of partners and is demonstrated by our whole system approach which focuses on a wider geographical area than just New Parks.

Through our community based work we have recognised that traditional methods of creating change that involve ‘top down’ or ‘bottom up’ approaches lead to linear silos. Our approach of building communities from the inside out has avoided the silo effect and ensured common purpose towards whole system changes.

We have recognised that organisations and communities are interlinked and interdependent, therefore a system perspective is at the centre of all our work, not just within the realm of sport and physical activity but across the healthcare, social care and public health system as well as more broadly across the 'place shaping agenda'.

Our approach to place leadership applies equally to local leaders within communities and to organisational leaders, strategic influencers and political leaders. We believe and work on the principle that true collaboration has no hierarchy and builds on the logic that partnership is the union which enables all parties to do something together that they cannot do alone. Genuine collaboration within a complex system as required adaptive practice by all involved and we are developing this through all our strategies.

Working in such uncertain, diverse and complex communities where approaches do not yield their normal expected results. We have needed to work flexibly as we encounter unprecedented situations and as our understanding of the local community grows.

Over time we have developed our local knowledge and intelligence which we now share with partners from the Public Sector, Third Sector and, where relevant and appropriate, the Private Sector. Our asset based community development approach is well recognised and we have started to share our success to create active vibrant communities and reducing health inequalities across the city, county and the country.

We have started to create a whole system change by doing things together, by modelling leadership practice and behaviours and by encouraging and enabling leadership at every level, particularly locally where individuals and whole communities own the shift that they create, supported by our services, infrastructure and assets where appropriate.

Through 8 years of hard work we are starting to see a culture shift whereby regular sport and physical activity is not just normal, but it is seen as central to good health and wellbeing, which in turn is creating a community to be proud of.
