The Herewoode Academy Modern Foreign Languages curriculum has been designed with our #ThisIsUs set of values at its heart. Along with the plethora of transferrable, technical and professional skills gained through the study of one or more other languages we hope to enable students to confidently build their communication skills, allowing them to be both resourceful and literate when communicating with others, in both their native and studied language(s).

Moreover, the study of a language allows an unparalleled insight into the culture of other countries creating students who are significantly more accepting of others and self. As a department comprised of three native English-speaking teachers, we fully understand the challenges of studying a foreign language and are therefore able to reduce students’ fear of making mistakes by using them as teaching opportunities to move the entire class forwards.

Allowing students to learn from and grow as a result of their mistakes will equip them with an “I can” mentality that can be carried with them for the rest of their lives.
